GROVE ROAD

Following de-consecration of the church it was offered for sale in September 2009 as a vacant but Listed building, the Listing having been triggered by an unsuccessful application for conversion to flats. The refusal was largely on the grounds of the impact on neighbors and on lack of car-parking provision, but included 'loss of a community facility’. The property was advertised for sale as a community building but after a lengthy advertisement period no developer would come forward. As such the building was subsequently purchased and a change of use to residential was permitted after protracted negotiation with the local planning department.

There is an abundance of architectural detail which is retained within the internal fabric and due to the listing status. The dramatic high ceilings, existing plaster cornice, ornate balcony carving and stain glass windows have all been retained and where required by the brave and visionary client who has taken on the conversion work as two properties in two phases. The Sunday School has subsequently been refurbished and altered to form a three bedroom dwelling, separated from the main mother building, The main chapel has been sensitively, yet dramatically refurbished to form a 5 bedroom dwelling which houses the clients vast collection of art work and memorabilia.

The very real challenge was in the subdivision and control of the internal spaces, maintaining a sense of drama, enhancing the existing details and creating a sense of home out of a space of worship.
